Extension of an Investors Residence Permit for Spain

As you may know, in 2013 Law 14/2013 “On the support of entrepreneurship and its internationalization” came into effect and this offered an additional opportunity to obtain a residence permit for Spain - an Investor Visa or, as it is often called a “Golden Visa”. For more details see our article ”Investor Visa”. This visa is valid for 1 year and allows you to remain in Spain for as long you wish within this time. However, it is not a full residence permit. To obtain that, it is necessary to extend the Spanish Investor Visa.

Diplomat-Consulting offers services to extend your Investor Visa and obtain a residence permit card, and all this almost without the personal participation of the investor. We work directly with the Unit for Large Companies and Strategic Economic Sectors of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Spain in Madrid, and therefore have the most up to date information on all questions relating to obtaining residence permits for investors. This advantage allows us to minimize the processing time and avoid possible problems with obtaining a positive resolution on the extension of the permits.

The procedure for extension consists of two stages: obtaining a positive resolution on the extension from the Unit for Large Companies and Strategic Economic Sectors, and then actually obtaining the residence permit cards for a period of 2 years on the police station, and in the future, for 5 years.

The first stage does not require the personal presence of the investor – we submit the request to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Spain in Madrid, keep track of it and obtain a positive resolution on the extension. The period for consideration of the request is 20 working days.

The next step is obtaining the residence permit card. To save time, Diplomat-Consulting recommends passing this stage at the Central Police Station of Immigration in Madrid (employees of the Police Station in Madrid, unlike the regional staff, are familiar with the peculiarities of investor residence permit processing and this process is finely-tuned), but, if requested by our client, such processing is also possible at a Police Station in the place of residence of the investor. At this stage the personal presence of the investor and his family members is a requirement in order to take fingerprints, but with the full support of Diplomat-Consulting’s representatives. Our employees will make an appointment and organize a meeting, prepare and submit documents to the Police Station, arrange the payment of all necessary fees and take on all communication with the Spanish civil servants. On average, the period required for the issue of a residence permit card through the Police Station in Madrid is 15 days; at a Police Station in the investor’s place of residence - 30-45 days. To receive the card you will also need to be present in person, but again, with the assistance of representatives of Diplomat-Consulting.

As a result, an investor and his family can obtain residence permit cards for a period of 2 years. Unlike a traditional non-lucrative residence permit, this residence permit does not impose an obligation to stay in Spain most of the year, but does allow you to engage in entrepreneurial activity or work in Spain. A further extension - for 5 years - can be arranged through the above scheme, again with help of Diplomat-Consulting.
